Archer Capital’s first step to creating the Rebel Group was leading the management buyout of Amart in July 2004. At the time of Archer's acquisition, Amart was a Queensland based network of 26 large-format stores selling branded sports equipment, footwear and apparel at competitive prices. In September 2005, Archer led the bolt-on acquisition of Rowe & Jarman, a complimentary sporting goods retailer in South Australia, Western Australia, Victoria, Tasmania and the Northern Territory. This acquisition added more than 30 predominantly small-format stores to the network, and, together with a strategic store roll-out program, saw growth to over 75 stores across every state in Australia.
Archer continued to drive the expansion strategy, and in March 2007 successfully acquired Rebel Sport, an ASX listed company and Australia’s largest sporting goods retailer. The acquisition was transformational, adding 63 large-format Rebel sporting goods stores, as well as 10 stores under the Glue Store brand, an apparel retailer of leading fashion brands. The resulting Rebel Group is Australia’s leading sporting goods retailer, with a national store network of over 150 stores. Archer completed the sale of the Rebel Group to the ASX listed Super Retail Group in December 2011.
